We quickly set about putting up the marquee in case the weather turned bad. Everyone pitched in. The people in the green tops always kept an eye on everything. Little by little the pitch filled up: we had reserved space for 13 vehicles, but in the end there were 18 of us on site. Despite the weather, nothing stood in the way of a cosy evening.
The marquee we had bought turned out to be a poor-quality product. In the rain and wind, many of the poles simply broke and bent. But for a camper these are just challenges, and with lots of good ideas the marquee was patched up and watertight again within an hour.
On Saturday we went on a trip to Corvey Castle and had booked a private tour for 12.30 p.m. in advance.
We left the pitch at 11.30 a.m. by bike and other alternative means of transport. We called this group "the sporty ones".
Some booked a minibus taxi from the pitch to the castle (we affectionately called them "the comfortable ones"). After only 40 minutes we reached Corvey Castle. The comfortable ones were of course already there and had fortified themselves with a beer after their strenuous journey.
Admission to the castle was 8 euros per person plus 50 euros for the private tour. But it was really worth it. The tour was led by Viktor Paulus, a retired German teacher who impressed us with his enormous expertise and witty asides. Highly recommended. After the 1.5-hour tour, we naturally needed some refreshment.
On Sunday it was already time for some of us to leave, as Monday was a working day again. But many used the bridging day for a long weekend.
It was a great mechanics' meetup and we had a lot of fun.
We're already looking forward to the next meetup in 2019.
