On Friday morning we set off by car for the Serengeti-Park in Hodenhagen. Thanks to it being a normal weekday outside the holiday season, the park was pleasantly empty, which made our stay particularly enjoyable.
After arriving, we started straight away with a ride on the safari bus. This was one of the highlights of our visit. The driver was not only very well informed but also entertained us with lots of humorous anecdotes and exciting facts about the animals. Seeing the animals up close while getting interesting background information was a real experience – absolutely recommended!
Away from the safari ride too, the park has lots of great attractions, which we could enjoy at our leisure.
For the night we had booked a stay in a hut at the Masai Mara Lodge. The accommodation was lovingly furnished in African style and fitted wonderfully into the overall experience. Particularly impressive was its location right next to the animal enclosure – we could watch the animals from our hut. Thanks to our access card we could also move freely around the park outside regular opening hours, which gave us a very special feeling of freedom.
However, two things slightly clouded our otherwise very positive impression. The hut's terrace had no shade, and as the sun was beating down on the day of our visit with not a breath of wind, it was hardly possible to sit there during the day. In addition, at only 1.40 metres wide the bed was rather narrow, especially as one side was right up against the wall. In our view there's still room for improvement here.
We had dinner and breakfast as a buffet in the park's own restaurant. The choice was good, and we both went into the evening and the day full and satisfied.
All in all, our costs for two people – including admission, food and accommodation, but excluding travel – came to around 350 euros. That's a hefty price for one night.
Conclusion: the Serengeti-Park is definitely worth a visit – we had a great time with lots of lasting impressions. Next time, however, we'll visit the park without staying overnight.
