In April 2024 we had booked a night in a castle. On Friday at midday we set off for Saalfeld an der Saale, about 300 kilometres away. After a journey with lots of traffic jams, we reached Schloss Wetzelstein on the edge of Saalfeld.
As soon as we arrived, we were fascinated by the castle's imposing architecture, surrounded by lush forests. The castle room we stayed in had an inviting atmosphere, enhanced by antique furniture and rustic decoration.
The lady of the castle, Kerstin Zapf, welcomed us very warmly, and we immediately felt at home. A tour of the castle, its own park and the grotto with a small glass of sparkling wine completed the picture.
The nights in the castle were quiet and restful, no doubt thanks to the comfortable bed and the historic stillness of the surroundings. In the morning we woke to the sunlight falling through the windows of the castle room and lighting up the picturesque landscape.
The view from Schloss Wetzelstein was without doubt one of the highlights of my stay. From our room we could look far out over the green hills and valleys while the birds chirped around the castle.
As well as the impressive accommodation, Schloss Wetzelstein offered a variety of activities, including walks through the castle park, tours of the historic walls and culinary delights in the local restaurants.
The old town of Saalfeld is a real gem, with its well-preserved half-timbered houses and narrow lanes that invite you to stroll. Wandering through the streets, I felt transported back to a bygone age when life was slower and simpler.
A visit to Sarotti and its factory outlet couldn't be missed on our trip.
All in all, my weekend at Schloss Wetzelstein was an unforgettable experience that offered me not only peace and relaxation but also the chance to immerse myself in the fascinating history of this region.
