Our destination was the lovely town of Celle – and what better time to visit than Christmas? Celle is famous for the more than 400 restored half-timbered houses in its town centre. A visit to the old town with its castle is a must. The motorhome pitch on the Schützenplatz (Hafenstraße) is free and only about 400 metres from the centre.
It's only a 10-minute walk to the town centre, so we set off. Our first stop was the oldest café in Celle: Kaffee Kiess. The way there already led past beautiful half-timbered houses. After a coffee we moved on to the next highlight in Celle, the old town hall. The building dates back to 1292.
The north gable was added in 1579. Over the centuries, some parts were demolished and rebuilt. Until 1999 the town hall was the seat of the town administration.
The Christmas market began right here – and that's where Father Christmas was hiding. The Christmas market stretched along the historic church of Celle. It was a dreamlike setting, with the Christmas forest in the foreground and the church in the background.
When we got back to the Schützenplatz, it had filled up. The large square is also used as a car park, and it was busy that weekend.
