Drage May 2010

Over a long weekend in May we stayed at Stover Strand on the Elbe – including a boat trip to Hamburg to see the Queen Mary 2 at anchor.

From 12 to 17 May we made use of the bridging day and treated ourselves to a long weekend in Stove/Drage on the Elbe. The Stover Strand campsite has its own boat harbour and slipway.

Thomas's standing table is worth its weight in gold – and even with LED lighting, simply brilliant. Our main drink that weekend was my wife's homemade marzipan liqueur and strawberry lime liqueur. We didn't just have 2 bottles, but 10 – and we finished them without any trouble. The pitch offers lots of space and there are no marked plots.

The next day we took the boat to Hamburg, as we had been told that the Queen Mary 2 was at anchor there. In front of us lay the QM2 in all her splendour. The weather wasn't great and it was rather cold, but that didn't matter. With such a fantastic ship, there's no need to write anything more – the pictures speak for themselves.

On Friday we cycled to Geesthacht (approx. 10 km). The route runs mostly along the Elbe and over the lock between Drage and Geesthacht. Geesthacht is a nice little town with a lovely shopping street – just right for a Saturday stroll.

We were actually looking for an Italian restaurant, but in vain. So we ended up at the Feuervogel in Geesthacht. The food was great and is recommendable.

On a trip to Lauenburg, before heading back by boat, we realised the wind had picked up a lot. The return trip was very choppy – and that on a river. But we arrived safely back in the Stover Strand harbour.
