In October we met up with Claudia and Lutz in Egestorf. Lutz had chosen the site, so we didn't give any thought to our destination beforehand. On Friday we simply entered the address and followed the satnav. The closer we got, the more we remembered: "We've been here before." Four years ago we had stopped here for one night on the way to Hamburg.

The pitch is idyllically situated on the edge of the forest, a little outside Egestorf. On the way to the pitch, an elderly gentleman on a bicycle came towards us and stopped us. He turned out to be the site warden and asked how long we wanted to stay. We paid for three nights straight away and got lots of tips about the area from the Innsbruck native.

Prices:

  • One night 8 euros
  • Two nights 7 euros
  • Three nights 6 euros

There is plenty of electricity, costing two euros for 16 hours (2-euro coins only), with camping plugs. The sockets are spread around the pitch; you pay centrally at the information stand. The pitch has several levels with trees, so before parking your motorhome you should check the reception.

A great tip from the warden was the free Heath shuttle bus. Right by the church in Egestorf there is a stop where two of the four Heath bus lines start, so you can head in any direction you like. A timetable is available at the information stand.

Egestorf is a small, idyllic village with lots of little highlights.

We took advantage of the offer the next morning and went to Buchholz in der Nordheide. The bus took an hour right across the heath and through small villages. We reached our destination right in the centre of Buchholz, with lots of shops and cafés.

Three hours later we went back. A great service from the district with these buses. In the evening the barbecue came out.

Every morning at 8 a.m. a bakery van comes to the pitch with treats. A great idea – the only downside is that the driver drives around the pitch honking 4–5 times. On a Sunday, many people on the pitch would surely like to sleep later than 8 a.m., but unfortunately that's not possible.

Admission prices for the park:

Adults 6 euros
Family ticket 20 euros

The entrance to the barefoot park is right next to the pitch. This almost 3-kilometre world of discovery for bare feet invites you to go for a walk.
