As Ascension Day and Whitsun fell in June in 2014, we used the time to explore the north of Europe.
On Wednesday evening we set off from Hanover in pouring rain, heading for Denmark. We had planned around 4.5 hours for the 360 kilometres, but we were soon proved wrong. First a smaller one-hour traffic jam near Schwarmstedt, about 50 kilometres past Hanover. The next jam wasn't long in coming: just before the Elbe Tunnel, nothing moved at all. The tunnel was completely closed (for roadworks), which cost us about 3 hours. So we only reached our first stop in Denmark, the town of Aabenraa, at around 1.30 a.m.
The motorhome pitch right by the sailing and yacht club was very well signposted and accessible even at night. The site right on the water has gravel pitches for around 60 motorhomes.
On Thursday morning, with the sun shining, we cycled into town to have a look around.
