We spent the days before Amsterdam in Roermond.

We had booked the Zeeburg campsite in advance. At the time of our trip, it cost 15 euros per night including electricity. The site has washrooms, toilets, fresh water and waste disposal, and a small supermarket.

In winter, the supermarket and reception are open from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. As we arrived after 12, we had phoned reception beforehand (English only) to check whether we had to park in a particular spot and whether the site was open in the afternoon. The site was open all day and we could simply choose a free pitch. The pitches are paved and can easily be used by large vehicles.

The weather in Amsterdam was warm at over 14 degrees, but there was a strong wind and rain the whole time.

The next morning we went to reception and bought a day ticket for the tram, along with leaflets about Amsterdam's sights. The staff member was also able to give us some tips straight away.

It was a 10-minute walk to the tram stop. The tram itself ran every five minutes. Important tip: you must always scan your day ticket at the machine in the tram, both when getting on and when getting off.

We took line 7 straight to the city centre and then strolled through the centre, past the canals to the palace.

More by chance than anything, we ended up in a very special part of Amsterdam: the cannabis quarter. In all the shops you could buy cannabis in every form – for example biscuits, lollipops, drinks, ice cream or as weed to smoke.

We continued through Chinatown back to the tram stop. The next day we used the scooter for more sightseeing in Amsterdam. Our first stop was the Maritime Museum. Admission is 17 euros per person, but it's worth the money.

After 4 days in Amsterdam, we headed home again.
