Over Easter we stayed at a campsite in Arnhem, which we had booked in advance. The small, friendly site is very clean and beautifully situated right next to the forest.

An overnight stay including electricity costs 20 euros; showers are operated with tokens that you can buy at reception – 5 minutes of showering cost 60 cents. You get a card for the barrier to drive in and out. The barrier is closed at night and can only be opened via an emergency phone number.

Our destination was Burgers' Zoo, a great and beautiful zoo in Arnhem, only about 2 kilometres from the campsite. 23 euros admission per adult isn't too much and is money well spent. From gorillas and lions to a tropical house, the park offers lots of variety.

Arnhem city centre is also worth a visit. It's about 6–7 kilometres from the campsite into town, and there are supermarkets on the way.

After a wonderful Easter weekend we headed home again.

Note: on Sundays and public holidays, reception doesn't open until 11 a.m., so we couldn't return the barrier card – for which we had left a 20-euro deposit. On the way home we quickly called the campsite and agreed to send the card back by post. We did so, and two days later our money was back in our account. Don't just put the card in an ordinary envelope, as its sharp edges will tear it – we simply used a cardboard envelope.
