Over Ascension Day 2015 we stayed at the Roompot campsite in Borger – with its own lake, an indoor pool, a bike ride to Assen and fish pedicures.

Over Ascension Day our destination was the Roompot campsite in Borger. The journey was very pleasant, as we only had one traffic jam. It's 280 kilometres from Hanover to Borger. We had already received the access card for the park by post in advance.
Our pitches are typical for the Netherlands: grass, with space in the middle for children to play. Fresh water and waste water right at the pitch. The site has its own lovely lake with a sandy beach. There is also a large adventure playground. A supermarket, restaurant and mini golf are right nearby. The campsite also has its own indoor pool, with admission included.
The next day the model car was tested – up to 35 km/h and huge fun for the big kids. Great weather, dry and sunny – it couldn't be nicer.
The next day we explored Borger. By bike the centre is 5 minutes away, but don't expect too much. There are a few shops and you can buy everything you need. Right by the roundabout there is a snack bar with great ice cream.
On Saturday we cycled to Assen, 27 kilometres away – a great town with lots of shops for browsing. A big market was taking place too.
By chance we saw an offer for fish pedicures: 7.50 euros for 30 minutes. We couldn't pass that up, as we had always wanted to try it.
We actually wanted to have a bite to eat in Assen, but all the prices started at 20 euros, so we set off back to Borger. A little tip: outside Assen there are lots of great restaurants with reasonable prices.
On Sunday we went home again. The Netherlands is one of our favourite destinations, and that won't change.
But we won't go back to the site in Borger. The showers and the noise on the site really bothered us. The shower rooms were very cold, as the doors to the outside were always open. The showers don't cost extra, but they can't be adjusted at all. Once switched on, the shower runs for 6 minutes non-stop and then stays off for at least 3 minutes. You can't make it colder or hotter, and stopping it in between isn't possible. The space in front of the shower is so small that your clothes always get wet.
