The day was important for us to switch off, and we spent it with massages, exploring the ship, shopping and so on. In sunshine and at 25 degrees, AIDAcosma set course for our first destination: Madeira.
The next morning we reached Funchal. Funchal is the capital of the Portuguese island of Madeira in the Atlantic Ocean. The city is known for its mild subtropical climate, its picturesque setting in a bay surrounded by mountains and its rich history. Here are the main features of Funchal:
Special features
Funchal combines historic architecture, tropical nature and a lively culture. The city is an ideal base for exploring Madeira and at the same time offers everything you need for a relaxing stay. From its culinary variety to its impressive views, Funchal is a pearl of the Atlantic.
Our ship lay very centrally, and the centre of Funchal is about 1 kilometre away. There was a shuttle bus, but we walked – the exercise did us good.
One destination for us was the market hall and the narrow lanes with their beautiful architecture.
After a lovely day on Madeira, we had reserved a table at Teppanyaki in the evening. This restaurant combines cooking and show in one, and guests can watch the food being prepared live. A very good idea and a great change. Unfortunately our chef felt he had to play the clown and constantly got the guests going with singing and strange antics, such as throwing food into the guests' mouths. The food itself was excellent and tasted very good. But because of the show, which takes some getting used to, this will be my only visit to this restaurant.
