The harbour itself has something for everyone, from observation towers and lighthouses to motorboats, sailing boats and even a submarine. There are lots of museum ships in Bremerhaven that can be visited from April to October. The submarine Wilhelm Bauer was built in the Second World War but never saw action and was scuttled by its crew in the Baltic Sea. In 1957 it was raised, repaired and handed over to the German Navy for training and research voyages. In 1984 the ship "retired" and has served as a museum ship ever since.
Right next to the museum harbour are the new Havenwelten. The newly built Mediterraneo is a shopping centre in Italian style. Shops line the narrow lanes and invite you to stroll around.
The entire shopping street is covered and heated. The many small details everywhere are impressive. We were there on Boxing Day, when the shops were still closed. The cafés and restaurants are also open at weekends and on public holidays. Events and small exhibitions are held on the "La Piazza" square. Cafés and restaurants invite you to linger. Entry to the Italian world is free. More information can be found at http://www.das-mediterraneo.com.
Right next to the Mediterraneo is the Klimahaus Bremerhaven 8° Ost. In the Klimahaus you go on a journey around the world, always following the 8th degree of longitude.
The journey starts and ends in Bremerhaven. You walk through a wide range of climate zones, from heat to cold, from arid regions to wetlands. Everywhere you meet people whose everyday lives are strongly shaped by the prevailing climate. There is always something new and unusual to discover, and your senses keep experiencing new stimuli.
That was just a small glimpse of the Klimahaus exhibition. It's definitely worth experiencing this world in person rather than just seeing it in pictures. A day ticket for adults costs 13 euros. More information can be found on the following website:
