The first day of the trip began in a relaxed way at Hanover airport, looking forward to sun and sea. The flight to Gran Canaria was calm – with every minute, the winter cold of northern Germany was exchanged for the warmth of the Canaries.

Even on the approach, the island showed itself from its best side: rugged coasts, deep blue sea and pleasant temperatures – a perfect start to the cruise.

Mein Schiff Relax was already waiting at the port. Boarding went smoothly, and the first step on board immediately felt like a holiday. Bright, modern architecture, spacious decks and a pleasant, calm atmosphere created an instant feel-good factor.

In the evening the four of us explored the Atlantik restaurant – stylishly furnished, with high-quality cuisine and attentive service. A successful start to the days ahead:

• excellently presented food

• relaxed atmosphere

• attentive but unobtrusive service

After dinner came a first cocktail in one of the bars on board – with a view of the illuminated deck and the gentle sound of the sea. The mood was relaxed, and the anticipation of the days ahead was palpable.

The rest of the evening was used to explore the ship:

pool deck, lounges, outer decks – new impressions everywhere and the feeling of having arrived.

The next morning Mein Schiff Relax reached the island of La Palma – green, mountainous and much more unspoilt than many other Canary Islands. As we sailed into the port of Santa Cruz de La Palma, the dramatic backdrop of steep slopes and deep blue Atlantic was already on show.

Active over the mountains – 30 km & 670 metres of climbing. The bikes had been booked in advance – and then we set off on our own.

Tour details:

• Distance: 30 km

• Climbing: 670 m

• Weather: 22 °C, sunshine

The route led over winding mountain roads with spectacular views of the sea and coast again and again. The alternation of climbs, panoramas and descents made the tour athletically demanding but absolutely worthwhile. It's not for nothing that La Palma is nicknamed La Isla Bonita.

After the sporting challenge came the relaxing part of the day: strolling through the charming old town of Santa Cruz. Narrow lanes, Canarian wooden balconies and cafés in the sun – at a pleasant 22 degrees, a perfect contrast to the active morning stage.

In the evening a visit to Fugu by Tim Raue was on the programme – the Asian-inspired gourmet restaurant on board, created by Tim Raue.
