As our ship lay a little outside the city, we decided to use public transport. In Tromsø that's very easy with the Svipper app: simply download it and add a means of payment. A day pass costs 133 NOK for an adult. The app also shows the current location of the buses.
The bus took us straight into the city. The harbour and the many small shops are a welcome change. Unfortunately the Arctic Cathedral was closed because of a funeral, so we had to make do with the view from outside. At the harbour we passed a troll museum, but we found the price of 450 NOK per person a bit too high. Of course the Hard Rock Cafe in Tromsø couldn't be missed.
In the evening we went on an unforgettable trip into the wintry countryside to experience a traditional reindeer sleigh ride. The tour began in the evening when we arrived at a picturesque farmstead, where the friendly-looking reindeer were already waiting for us.
Unfortunately the booked sleigh ride had to be cancelled because of a lack of snow, but it was still a wonderful evening. We were allowed to watch the animals being fed or feed them ourselves, which was a great experience. Afterwards a cosy campfire awaited us. The crackling glow of the fire created a pleasant atmosphere while we enjoyed a traditional dinner of local specialities, with hot drinks such as tea or gløgg, a spiced Scandinavian punch.
As we warmed ourselves by the fire, our guide told interesting stories about reindeer herding and the culture of the indigenous Sámi people. The evening ended in a relaxed way, accompanied by the soft crackle of the wood and an impressive view of the starry sky.
We had booked the tour in advance through GetYourGuide and can recommend it.
After a quiet night we reached Honningsvåg early in the morning.
Honningsvåg is a small town in northern Norway and belongs to the municipality of Nordkapp in the county of Troms og Finnmark. It's considered one of the northernmost towns in the world and is an important base for tourists who want to visit the North Cape – so just the right place for us.
Because of its location north of the Arctic Circle, the town experiences the midnight sun in summer, while in winter there are long periods of darkness.
