In Edinburgh we had chosen a campsite on the outskirts. With the ADAC discount, an overnight stay cost 29 pounds. You can choose your pitch yourself and then give the number at reception. A very nice site with very clean showers, and the service point for fresh water and waste disposal is easy to reach. At reception we were warned not to leave bikes or scooters outside overnight, as they tend to get stolen on the site. So we kept loading the scooter back on. There is said to be a good bus connection from the site to the city centre, but we didn't use it. In the morning we rode the scooter to Edinburgh Castle. It was midweek and completely overcrowded. Admission costs 18.50 pounds per person. The castle is beautiful and kept in very good condition, but because of the enormous crowds it was very, very tiring. The waiting time to see the Scottish Crown Jewels was about 50 minutes. The Royal Mile starts right at the castle – one of, or rather the grand street of Edinburgh.
The evening before, we had watched the TV programme "Detlef muss reisen", in which he had to go to Scotland. In Edinburgh he visited Scotland's oldest pub, the Sheep Heid Inn. As it looked great, we went there to eat. It's on the edge of the city and very hard to reach without a car.
The restaurant really is a typical old pub, and you should eat there at least once. At lunchtime there's a menu with starter, main course and dessert for 16 pounds.
The next morning we had pre-booked the Real Mary King's Close tour, which takes you into Edinburgh's underground. Highly recommended.
Then on to the Britannia, the royal yacht. Today the ship is a museum and lies in the city's port of Leith, right next to a shopping mall where there was a Build-A-Bear promotion that day – queues as far as the eye could see. After almost 4 days in Edinburgh, we headed back to the ferry in Hull. After a calm crossing we arrived home on Saturday afternoon, and a wonderful holiday came to an end.
