Interesting facts about the tidal current:
The tidal current at Bodø is an impressive natural phenomenon caused by the town's geographical location. Bodø lies at the entrance to the Saltstraumen, a strait between the mainland and the Lofoten islands in Norway. The Saltstraumen is known for its strong tidal current, one of the strongest in the world.
The tidal current is created by the tidal forces of the sun and moon, which make the water in the strait build up and then flow out again. At high tide, the incoming water forces its way through the narrow passage and creates a powerful current that moves at incredible speed. At low tide the water is then sucked out of the fjord, forming an impressive whirlpool.
The evening was rounded off with a massage and a cosy dinner at Rossini.
On arrival in Alta, our first highlight lay ahead: the northern lights. The chances of seeing the lights in the sky were very good. We had booked the excursion "Fascination Northern Lights" with AIDA in advance.
In the evening the buses took us to an event centre a little outside Alta. At the centre there was a rather large event tent, a few smaller tents and campfires dotted around. Small snacks and drinks were served.
We all waited for the northern lights, but the cloud cover was simply too thick. Disappointed, we were driven back to AIDAmar after 3 hours.
