Day 7: Suspension Railway, Blue Wonder, and a Social Evening

We took our bikes to the ferry, crossed over to the other side of the Elbe, and cycled along the river to the valley station of the Dresden Suspension Railway (Dresdner Schwebebahn).

A quick bit of history: opened in 1901, it is considered the oldest mountain suspension railway in the world. Designed according to the system of Eugen Langen, who also designed the Wuppertal Suspension Railway, it covers around 84 meters in altitude over a distance of nearly 274 meters and is additionally pulled uphill by a cable.

At the top, we were rewarded on the viewing terrace with a cold drink and a fantastic view over the whole of Dresden.

Back in the valley, our bike ride led us across another landmark: the Blue Wonder (Blaues Wunder). Officially named the Loschwitz Bridge, this steel lattice bridge was inaugurated in 1893. At the time, it was considered a technical masterpiece because it spans the Elbe without any river piers. It owes its nickname to its blue paint and the public's amazement at this "wonder."

At 5:00 PM, we were picked up by our wine-hiking group, and over dinner together, the day came to an end in the best of company.
